Weichai WP13 Connecting Rod 612630020017 Diesel Engine Parts

Model: WP13

Part Number: 612630020017

Brands: Weichai Power

Engine Model: WP13, WP13.480, WP13.500, WP13.550, WP13.580

Engine Type: Diesel

Scope of application: heavy haulage trucks, mining dump trucks, construction machinery, generator sets

Loads on a WP13 connecting rod

In a 13-litre diesel the rod is pulled in tension by piston inertia, pushed in compression by combustion and bent sideways as the crank swings. Part 612630020017 is the forged rod used in the WP13 family, fitted with a small end bush for the piston pin and bearing shells at the big end.

Because the load reverses, fatigue failures begin at the transition from shank to big end, which is why rods are shot peened and why the cap must stay with its original rod. Each pair is machined together and cannot be swapped without losing bore alignment.

Applications and fitment

The rod fits WP13 engines from 480 to 580 horsepower in heavy trucks, mining dump trucks, large loaders and generator sets. Confirm the engine plate and the old rod number. Rods from different ratings can share a length but differ in weight and small end diameter.

Forging and matching

  • Forged alloy steel with grain flow along the shank.
  • Shot peening for fatigue resistance.
  • Weight matching within a set.
  • Big end bore and small end bush machined to specification.
  • Matched cap retained with its rod.

Rods ship with the bush fitted and new rod bolts where the design uses stretch bolts.

Symptoms of a damaged rod

  • Deep knock increasing with load
  • Oil pressure dropping as clearance opens
  • Bearing shells with copper visible or a blue tint
  • Lighter double knock at idle from the pin
  • Bend or twist visible on a surface plate
  • Oval scoring on the crank journal

Once a bearing spins, the rod is generally destroyed as well, and continuing to run risks the rod breaking the block.

Installation practice

  1. Check every rod for bend and twist before assembly.
  2. Verify big end bore with new shells fitted and torqued.
  3. Confirm oil clearance with plastigauge on each journal.
  4. Fit new rod bolts and torque to stretch or angle.
  5. Check pin fit in the bush for free rotation without play.
  6. Keep rods numbered and refit to the same journals.

Selecting the correct rod

Match the part number, the engine rating and the piston pin diameter. A rod from a different rating may be the wrong weight, which shows up as vibration at speed and early main bearing wear. Check the numbers stamped on the existing rods if the engine has been rebuilt before.

Bearings, clearance and stretch bolts

The rod bearing is where most failures begin. Shells come in standard and undersize grades and the grade must match the journal after any regrind. Always check clearance with plastigauge rather than assuming. Rod bolts are stretch bolts and must be replaced every time a rod is opened.

Detonation and rod damage

Detonation hammers the piston and rod on every cycle, squeezing the oil film out of the big end bearing until the shell fatigues. Engines that have run with a faulty injector, low fuel pressure or excessive boost often show rod bearing damage with no obvious wear elsewhere.

Freight and packing

Rods are packed in a rigid carton with the big end protected and caps wired to their rods so they cannot be mixed in transit. If the shipment includes pistons, tell us so the rods can share the carton and freight.

Protecting the rod in service

Rod life depends on oil pressure and on avoiding detonation. Use the specified oil, change it at the severe-duty interval and never run with a leaking injector that dilutes the oil. Diagnose excessive smoke or power loss promptly rather than waiting for the next service.

Checking rod alignment and twist

Rod alignment is measured with a fixture or a surface plate and pins. Bend shows as a difference in height between the two pins, and twist shows as a difference in their angle. A rod that is out by only a little will still fit, but it loads the piston against the bore and wears the bearing on one side.

Used rods from a running engine should always be checked before reuse. A rod that has been through a bearing failure is usually best replaced, because the big end bore distorts when the bearing spins and cannot be recovered by fitting new shells.

FAQ

Are rod bolts included?

New rod bolts are supplied where the design uses stretch bolts.

Can I replace just one rod?

Yes, if the crank and other rods are undamaged. Match the weight class.

How do I check for bend?

Mount on a surface plate with pins in both ends and measure with a dial gauge.

What causes rod bearing failure?

Low oil pressure, contaminated oil or detonation.

Description

Weichai WP13 Connecting Rod (612630020017). The connecting rod transfers the firing impulse from the piston to the crankshaft. Its big end carries the highest alternating load of any bearing in the engine.

Check the big end bore and the small end bush before ordering. A rod that has run with a worn bush loads the piston pin unevenly and produces a knock mistaken for a bearing fault.

Numbers beginning 6126 belong to the generation shared with the WD618 and early WP12 engines. Parts in this block were revised several times, so the casting or housing is the reliable identifier rather than the number alone. On this engine, confirm the WP13 application against the engine plate before ordering.

Use new rod bolts. A stretched bolt loses clamping load and the cap frets under load, which destroys the bearing and then the journal in quick succession.

Ordering note. Mixed pallets are accepted, so a single order can carry the block, the gasket set and the small seals together instead of arriving in three shipments.
