Model: WP6
Part Number: 12160519
Brands: Weichai Power
Engine Model: WP6, WP6G, WP6H
Engine Type: Diesel
Scope of application: light and medium trucks, buses, agricultural machinery, generator sets
The connecting rod links the piston to the crankshaft and reverses load twice per revolution. It is pulled in tension by piston inertia, pushed in compression by combustion and bent sideways as the crank swings. On the Weichai WP6, part 12160519 is the forged rod used in the mid-range family, with a small end bush for the piston pin and bearing shells at the big end.
Because the load reverses, fatigue failures begin at the transition from the shank to the big end. Rods are shot peened for that reason, and the cap must stay with its original rod because each pair is machined together.
The rod fits WP6, WP6G and WP6H engines in light and medium trucks, buses, tractors and small generator sets. These engines are common in Africa and Southeast Asia, often in continuous duty with limited maintenance. Confirm the engine plate and the old rod number: rods from different ratings can share a length but differ in weight and small end diameter.
Rods are forged from alloy steel with controlled grain flow, shot peened and then machined. The big end bore and small end bush are finished to specification, and rods are weight matched within a set so the engine stays balanced at speed.
Rods ship with the small end bush fitted and new rod bolts where the design uses stretch bolts.
A rod problem usually announces itself as noise. A deep knock that increases with load and speeds up with rpm is the classic sign of a worn big end bearing, and by that stage the rod is usually already damaged.
Once a bearing spins, the rod is generally destroyed too, and continuing to run risks the rod breaking the block.
Match the part number, the engine rating and the piston pin diameter. A rod from a different rating may be the wrong weight, which shows up as vibration at speed and early main bearing wear. Check the numbers stamped on the existing rods if the engine has been rebuilt before.
The rod bearing is where most failures begin. Shells come in standard and undersize grades and the grade must match the journal after any regrind. Always check clearance with plastigauge rather than assuming, because one undersize journal is easy to miss. Rod bolts are stretch bolts and must be replaced every time a rod is opened.
Rods are packed in a rigid carton with the big end protected and caps wired to their rods so they cannot be mixed in transit. If the shipment includes pistons, tell us so the rods can be packed in the same carton and freight shared.
Rod life depends on oil pressure and on avoiding detonation. Use the specified oil, change it at the severe-duty interval and never run with a leaking injector that dilutes the oil. Persistent over-fuelling or a failed turbo can cause detonation that hammers the rod bearings, so diagnose excessive smoke or power loss promptly.
Detonation, or uncontrolled combustion, is the quiet killer of rod bearings. It hammers the piston crown and the rod on every cycle, squeezing the oil film out of the big end bearing until the shell fatigues. Engines that have run with a faulty injector, low fuel pressure or excessive boost often show rod bearing damage with no obvious wear on the rest of the assembly.
If a rod has failed without a clear oil-related cause, check the injection system and the boost control before rebuilding. Otherwise the new rod will follow the old one within a few thousand kilometres.
New rod bolts are supplied where the design uses stretch bolts. They must not be reused.
Yes, if the crank and other rods are undamaged. Match the weight class.
Mount on a surface plate with pins in both ends and measure with a dial gauge.
Low oil pressure, contaminated oil or detonation. Fix the cause before fitting new parts.
Browse the Weichai piston and components category, and pair the rod with the WP6 cylinder head 13028584 or the WP6 engine overhaul kit 13032095.
Weichai WP6 Connecting Rod (12160519). The connecting rod transfers the firing impulse from the piston to the crankshaft. Its big end carries the highest alternating load of any bearing in the engine.
Confirm the rod is weight matched to the set if you are replacing fewer than six. Mismatched rods produce vibration that is often traced to the crankshaft instead.
The part number is the reliable identifier here. Where the old number is unreadable, measure the component and compare it with the drawing rather than guessing from the engine model. On this engine, confirm the WP6 application against the engine plate before ordering.
Use new rod bolts. A stretched bolt loses clamping load and the cap frets under load, which destroys the bearing and then the journal in quick succession.
Ordering note. Photographs of the actual unit can be sent before dispatch on request. That is the cheapest way to avoid a return when a casting revision is in doubt.
